art:berlin - Friedrich-Wilhelm-Stadt: from the Plague House to the Theatre to the BND
Incentive
Friedrich-Wilhelm-Stadt is unjustly overshadowed by the better-known Spandauer Vorstadt, the western part of which it was separated from in 1828. There was already the Charité, built in 1709 as a plague house, and the magnificent private gardens on the Spree. The old Berlin district not only has a lot to tell, from veterinary and human medicine, theatre and science history or GDR times. Of particular interest are the numerous, often rather unknown architectural monuments of the small quarter between the Spree and Invalidenstraße, Humboldthafen and Friedrichstraße. The north was dominated by the military and is now dominated by the new, mighty BND headquarters.
